Travellers looking to get to a major South American city on the Pacific Ocean now have more options since a Canadian airline increased service from Pearson Airport in Mississauga.

Air Transat now offers two weekly flights year-round from Pearson to Lima, the capital of Peru and also the largest city in the South American nation.

“Discover the rich culture of Lima, Peru,” Pearson officials said via social media this week in announcing the carrier’s expanded service. “Enjoy approximately 30 per cent shorter flight time compared to current itineraries and seize the opportunity to connect through Pearson.”

With an estimated population of just over 10 million people (2023 census) — over 11 million, according to worldpopulationreview.com — Lima is the second-most populous city in the Western Hemisphere, behind only Sao Paulo, Brazil.

It’s also considered to be the political, cultural, financial and commercial center of Peru.

This past fall, Air Transat announced an “ambitious” plan that will see it whisk travellers from Pearson to more than 25 destinations worldwide next summer.

Officials with the carrier said in an earlier news release that the leisure airline’s summer 2024 schedule out of Pearson “…reflects a significant recovery, particularly in key markets of Europe and the south.”

At the peak of the season next summer, officials add, “the airline will offer 110 weekly direct flights, serving more than 25 destinations” and newly added direct flights to Lima will now be offered year-round.

A key focus of the summer 2024 plan will see the airline increase the frequency of its flights to England, Croatia, Ireland, Italy and Portugal “in order to offer customers greater travel flexibility.”

The new flights will also allow Air Transat to offer daily service to Dublin and Manchester, the carrier says.

In total, Air Transat will serve 15 European destinations with direct flights from Pearson next summer. Destinations also include Scotland, Spain and France.

Additionally, the carrier, voted World’s Best Leisure Airline at the 2023 Skytrax World Airline Awards, will increase the frequency of its flights from Pearson to hot spots in the south that include Peru, Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
