The redistribution of federal ridings will see a major change coming for some Burlington voters during the next federal election.

A new riding of “Burlington North – Milton West” has been created which essentially replaces the old riding of “Oakville North – Burlington” a seat currently held by Liberal Pam Damoff.

The new riding will have about an even split of voters between Burlington and Milton.

Here is how the new riding is described by Elections Canada:

  1. that part of the City of Burlington lying northwesterly of a line described as follows: commencing at the intersection of the southwesterly limit of said city (Kerns Road) and Dundas Street; thence northeasterly along said street to Highway 407; thence southerly along said highway to Guelph Line; thence southeasterly along said line to Upper Middle Road; thence northeasterly along said road to Walkers Line; thence southeasterly along said line to Queen Elizabeth Way (Highway 403); thence northeasterly along Queen Elizabeth Way to the northeasterly limit of said city (Burloak Drive); and
  2. that part of the Town of Milton lying southwesterly of a line described as follows: commencing at the intersection of the southeasterly limit of said town (Lower Base Line West) and Regional Road 25; thence northwesterly along said road, Ontario Street South and Ontario Street North to Steeles Avenue East; thence southwesterly along said avenue to Martin Street; thence northwesterly along said street and Regional Road 25 to the northerly limit of said town (5 Side Road).

The riding of “Burlington” will remain intact and stretch from the municipal borders of Hamilton to the west and Oakville to the east and zigzag along the top end across sections of Dundas St., Upper Middle Rd. and the QEW. Karina Gould is the Liberal MP for this riding.

Initial redistribution plans called for changes to the Burlington riding that would have excluded the neighbourhoods of Brant Hills, Tyandaga and Elizabeth Gardens from this riding but that is no longer the case after strong objections from the community.

The federal government re-examines riding about every 10 years to take into consideration growth and changing population trends.

The next federal election must be held no later than October 2025 but can be called sooner by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
