New elementary schools in Whitby, Ajax built in part from Queen’s Park capital grant

The Durham District School Board welcomed two new elementary schools to the family this month – Willow Walks Public Elementary School in Whitby and Rosemary Brown Public School in Ajax.
Willow Walks was built with the help of a $13.3 million capital investment grant from Queen’s Park, part of the Province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.
“The funding for this new school is great news for our community,” said Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby and Chief Government Whip. “This investment will provide a quality learning environment and new opportunities for the children.”
The grant helped provide 490 elementary student spaces, 73 new licensed childcare spaces, four new childcare rooms and an EarlyON Child and Family Centre.
Willows Walk Public Elementary School is located at 51 Lazio Street in Whitby.
“The Durham District School Board appreciates the investment made by the Government of Ontario for the benefit of students and families at Willows Walk PS,” said Carolyn Morton, Chair of Durham District School Board. “We are delighted to welcome students to the newly opened Willows Walk PS in Whitby and to Rosemary Brown PS in Ajax for the 2021-22 school year and look forward to doing an official opening ceremony with the community in Spring 2022.”

Rosemary Brown Public School, named after the prominent Jamaican-born Canadian who was a social worker by education and practice, Canada’s first Black female member of a provincial legislature and the first woman to run for leadership of a federal political party.
Brown also became Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission in 1993.
Rosemary Brown Public School is located at 270 Williamson Drive, West in Ajax. The school will have a capacity of 558 students.
The Ontario Government is investing $14 billion in capital grants over the next decade, including allocating $550 million in 2020-21 for new schools, additions and major renovations, as well as an extra $25 million to improve ventilation in schools as students return for in-person learning.
