New Duffin’s Creek boardwalk open in Ajax

A new boardwalk is now open at the mouth of Duffin’s Creek, providing a link between the Duffin’s Pedestrian Bridge and Rotary Park in Ajax.

The boardwalk, which spans Duffin’s Marsh, along with a new trail section, also provides a new connection to the Ajax Waterfront Trail, part of the Trans Canada Trail system.

The new metal and wood boardwalk structure built thanks to a $1.6 million investment from federal Gas Tax Fund monies, will be elevated above the beach and marsh area, allowing natural beach processes to occur without impacting the Waterfront Trail.

The old boardwalk, located just to the west, was constructed in the early 1990s and had encountered several washouts and was in constant need of repair, prompting the decision to design a new elevated structure, this time set further back from the waterfront and the ecologically sensitive marsh.

Work on the boardwalk began in February and was completed June 30.

Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland was on hand with local dignitaries for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The new raised boardwalk will mitigate erosion, enhance the surrounding natural environment and help make Ajax greener for future generations,” Holland said.
