The severity of crime is on a downward trend in Mississauga and Brampton.

New data released by Statistics Canada shows Peel Region had a crime severity index (CSI) of 35.20 per cent in 2021, a decrease of 5.10 per cent from the previous year and continuing a downward trend that started in 2019.

The CSI measures the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada and has a base index value of 100. Police-reported metrics include only those incidents that come to the attention of police, either through reporting by the public or proactive policing.

To give the data further context, the higher the number the greater the severity of crime. By comparison Toronto has a rate of 68.26 per cent (an increase of 2.06 per cent), while Halton Region’s rate is 23.85 per cent (an increase of 4.91 per cent). The national numbers were 73.90 per cent which is virtually unchanged from 2020 numbers.

The data is mined from information provided by Peel Regional Police (which does not include Caledon).

Violent crime has also decreased in Mississauga and Brampton, according to the data, with a rate of 44.95 per cent in 2021, a decrease of 4.80 per cent from 2020. Violent crimes include assault, harassing and threatening behaviours and homicide.

Further, non-violent crime such as drug arrests and property offences, dropped by 5.28 per cent in Mississauga and Brampton, to a rating of 29.96 per cent.
