New case totals of the COVID-19 virus spiked yesterday, though hospital numbers and outbreaks in long term care homes and retirement residence remained largely stable.

The deaths continue to mount up, however, as one more death was reported Tuesday in Whitby and another added to Monday’s total (Ajax), bring the total since the pandemic began to 424.

New cases reported yesterday totalled 178 (bearing in mind the numbers are likely under-represented), led by Oshawa’s 59, and the active case count is now at 1,349.

There are 27 institutional outbreaks – the same as yesterday – with 69 people affected (up five). The good news there are no major outbreaks.

All workplace outbreaks have been resolved as well.

Absenteeism in child care centres last week was 4.8 per cent. In elementary schools and secondary schools it was 2.6 per cent.
