If you regularly commute in Mississauga, there are some upcoming construction projects to be aware of.

But any delays will be worth it in the end.

The LRT is moving forward, and while that’s good news for the city—honestly, it is—the lengthy construction process will affect some commutes.

But construction is a small price to pay for one of the most significant infrastructure projects the city has ever seen.

The LRT, a $1 billion higher-order transit project being carried out by Metrolinx, will span 18 km and run from Port Credit GO at Lakeshore Rd. in the south to the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Ave in the north. The LRT will boast 19 stops and provide connections to the Port Credit and Cooksville GO stations, Mississauga Transitway, MiWay and Zum transit lines.

Initially, it was slated to run 20 km and feature 22 stops, but Metrolinx recently announced it was chopping the City Centre loop to reduce costs.

While this news came as quite a shock, the city said it was happy to hear the project was proceeding as planned after the provincial NDP raised the alarm that the Ford government might scrap it all together back in 2018.

Metrolinx recently announced that more construction is or will be underway on one of the city’s major streets.

What’s coming up soon?

Enbridge Gas Line Relocation Hurontario Street and Andrika Court

To accommodate the construction of the LRT, Enbridge is required to install a new gas line on Hurontario Street from Andrika Court to Barondale Drive. The work is scheduled to start in late July 2019 and will last for approximately five weeks.

The work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Metrolinx says that while every effort will be made to minimize disruption, residents and businesses near the work site can expect to hear noise caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment.

At no time will all lanes be closed.

During construction hours, lane reductions will be required on Hurontario Street between Barondale Drive to Andrika Court.

Traffic delays are expected.

Transit users should note that due to lane reductions along Hurontario Street, delays can be expected on MiWay routes 19, 19A, 19B, 103 and Züm route 502.

Pedestrians are advised to use caution and follow signage, as detours might be required. Sidewalk access in the area could be affected.

Enbridge will also be required to install a new gas line on Hurontario Street between Matthews Gate to Fairview Road.

Metrolinx says work is scheduled to start in early July and will last for approximately 18 weeks. Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Residents and businesses near the work site can expect to hear noise caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment. That said, all properties in the area will remain accessible at all times.

At no time will all lanes be closed.

During construction hours, lane reductions will be required on Hurontario Street between Matthews Gate and Fairview Road. At a minimum, one north and southbound lane will be maintained at all times.

Transit users should note that delays can be expected on MiWay Routes 19, 19A, 19B, 103, 53, 3 and 8.

Pedestrians should note that sidewalk access could be affected in the area. Pedestrians are advised to use caution and keep an eye out for any signage indicating that detours are required.
