A new arcade full of claw machines is opening soon in Mississauga.
Klawcadia, a claw machine arcade, is taking over a space in Port Credit at 110 Lakeshore Rd. E.
“We’re just here to bring fun and laughter to the Port,” the new venture posted on Instagram.
The arcade will celebrate its grand opening on Oct. 28. Klawcadia will be giving away prizes to the first 100 to visit the store during the grand opening day.
Klawcadia made a surprise appearance during the Southside Shuffle street festival on Sept. 9. They offered free plays on a claw machine placed outside the shop. One lucky player won a large Hello Kitty plushy.
Claw machines aren’t new, in fact, they have been around since the late 1800s, believed to be inspired by the machines used to build the Panama Canal.
These days, the machines are typically cabinets with a joystick-controlled claw where the player can operate the claw attempting to pick up a prize.
At the height of arcade culture in the 1980s, claw machines were a staple alongside pinball machines and Pac Man games.
But there are now claw machine arcades popping up — there are several in Toronto.
