A busy community centre serving the northeast part of Mississauga is scheduled to reopen this coming Monday after a series of “much-needed” renovations.
Upgrades have been completed to some 5,180 square feet of Malton Community Centre and the facility will open its doors to the public again on Oct. 27, Mississauga Ward 5 Coun. Natalie Hart said this week at city council.
The swimming pool will reopen a week or so later, Hart added, noting “it has to be filled, heated and then inspected by Peel Public Health.”
The councillor said the “much-needed” renovations feature a number of upgrades “including the complete overhaul of the bathrooms.”
Malton Library, which is attached to the Morning Star Drive community centre, has also been completely renovated and “they were able add some individual meeting spaces and exam spaces, which is really important for people,” Hart added.
City of Mississauga officials said in an online description of the project the scope of work also included improvements to or introduction of:
- a series of multipurpose rooms outfitted with kitchenettes and audio-visual systems
- gym/fitness area (features a double gym)
- completely redesigned change rooms with adjacent steam rooms
- staff office
- meeting room and storage/service spaces
- upgrades to all finishes
- new LED-fixture lighting
- better sightlines for added “passive security”
- electrical upgrades and maintenance
The two-storey, 60,170-sq.-ft. community centre, which closed to the public on Sept. 29 to allow for the renovations, opened in 1975, the city said.
Officials noted “existing conditions” limited the scope of renovations in the following ways:
- load-bearing masonry walls limited the configuration of the multipurpose rooms
- exit corridor width could not be increased due to the location of existing load-bearing walls
