Construction starts on new cricket pitch open in time for summer season in Brampton

The city is set to move ahead with plans to build Brampton’s first year-round cricket facility for players to use even in the winter months.

The new winterized cricket pitch will be the first of its kind in Brampton and is being proposed for Brampton’s Earnscliffe Park. Plans include a covered dome for players to use even during snowy weather, according to a report going to a committee of Brampton City Council on Wednesday.

With an increased demand for cricket amenities in the city and a goal of becoming the cricket capital of Canada, the city says adding a winterized facility to the city’s growing number of pitches will give local groups more opportunities to play and hopefully attract more international users.

The new pitch will be an artificial field approximately 146 metres by 81 metres or 2.9 acres in size with flexibility for both indoor and outdoor play, depending on the season.

A budget of $2 million has already been earmarked for the city to begin the procurement process for the project, which will include the design and construction of the dome. Council is expected to give the project the green light, with city staff reporting back with an update on additional funding.

No timeline for the project has been given by the city but Earnscliffe Park has already been selected as the future home of the facility. With several outdoor amenities like a cricket pitch, baseball diamond, tennis courts and the nearby Earnscliffe Recreation Centre make the park “a suitable location for the development of a new infrastructure.”

The new winterized facility is just the latest cricket project to get support from the city and follows the opening of Brampton’s first tape ball cricket pitch that opened last August, a four-lane batting cage at the Kwality Sweets Cricket Pitch, another four batting cages at the Save Max Sports Centre, and shade shelters at various pitches across the city to provide some relief during the summer months.

Brampton also hosted the 2024 GT20 cricket tournament again last year with some 200 million fans watching at home and around the world.

If the report is approved by council, city staff will move ahead with a procurement process for the design and construction of the dome.

The city is also still searching for partners to bring a cricket stadium and sports entertainment district to Brampton.

Formerly known as the CAA Lands, the 45-hectare City Lands site at Kennedy Rd. South and Highways 410 and 407 is earmarked for redevelopment under the City’s 2040 Vision plan.
