Development applications have been filed for a new affordable housing development that could bring 200 more low-cost rental units to Brampton.

The proposal comes from the Peel Housing Corporation, which is looking to develop a plot of land at 10 Knightsbridge Rd. in Brampton into a 20-storey affordable housing complex.

The infill development called Chelsea Gardens would bring 200 new affordable rental units to the city right next to a pair of existing Peel Housing apartment towers that have a combined 250 units.

The proposed 20-storey building would include an expansion of the existing underground parking garage with 50 more spaces and an above-ground lot with another 89 parking stalls. Plans include 113 one-bedroom units, 68 two-bedroom suites, and another 19 three-bedroom units.

The 1.61-hectare site is just east of Central Park Drive, and the development would require some 0.21 hectares on the northern portion
of the plot which is currently vacant.

The zoning application was filed late last year, but plans for Chelsea Gardens go back to 2019 as one of 31 sites located throughout Peel that were earmarked for redevelopment by Regional Council in efforts to accommodate more than 5,650 new affordable rental units.

Funding has also already been approved through a $1 billion capital envelope, according to the application.

Nearby amenities include Bramalea City Centre just a few blocks away, Knightsbridge Park, the Bramalea Bus Terminal, Chinguacousy Park and the new Chinguacousy Library Branch.

A zoning bylaw amendment for the affordable housing development has already been approved by the City of Brampton, The project is currently in the design phase with early construction starting as early as October, according to the Region of Peel.
