From impaired driving offences and speeding, to aggressive driving and distracted motorists, police laid nearly 600 charges north of Brampton during Canada Day operations.

The OPP’s Canada Day safety blitz lasted more than a week, and saw officers out on Ontario roads to watch for the “Big Four” of driving errors – impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and aggressive driving, and improper seat belt use.

During the campaign Caledon police say they laid a total of 585 charges, including but not limited to 156 speeding charges, 22 seat belt offences, 14 stunt driving offences, and 11 distracted driving offences.

Nine impaired driving charges were also laid.

Over 100 people have died already this year on Ontario roads as the numbers of fatal collisions are tracking significantly higher than average, police say.

The OPP Highway Safety Division says the number of fatal crashes is up 22 per cent so far in 2026 compared to last year, with over 125 people dying in crashes investigated by provincial police.

“The OPP remains committed to making our roads a safer place through enforcement and public education,” police said in a release on Tuesday. “Motorists are encouraged to contact the OPP to report unsafe vehicles and unsafe driving behaviours that are observed. Road safety is a shared responsibility.”

Anyone who witnesses a suspected impaired or unsafe driver can report it to police by calling 911 when it is safe to do so. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.
