Mississauga power outage leaves nearly 4,000 homes, businesses in the dark

Nearly 500 homes in Brampton are without power amid a major snowstorm.

Hydro company Alectra Energy announced the outage shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 12. They said 478 homes and businesses are without power around Kennedy Rd. S and Hwy 41o, and Hwy 407 to Glidden Rd. Alectra sent out a repair crew but there is not yet an estimated completion time. They have yet to disclose the reason for the outage.

Brampton and much of the GTA are also under a weather alert, with Mississauga calling it a “significant weather event.” Alectra put out their own, “A major storm is brewing, bringing heavy wet snow and strong wind gusts this evening across southern Ontario.”

As of this writing, it is zero degrees in Brampton, but it feels closer to minus seven thanks to the wind. On average the wind is whipping by around 40 km/h but is gusting up to 70 km/h during strong blasts. This has resulted in heavily blowing snow and reduced visibility.
