Community members are rallying around the family of a young Brampton man killed in a car crash over the weekend.
The OPP said one person was killed in the collision that happened in the early morning hours of Sunday on Bramalea Road near Boston Mills Road.
Three people were in the vehicle when it left the roadway and a 21-year-old man from Brampton was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the victim was a passenger in the vehicle and that a second passenger, 20, also from Brampton, was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre where he remains in critical condition. The driver also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators haven’t released the name of the deceased but the victim has been identified by Mandeep Kumar as their cousin, Amritpal, according to posts online.
The 21-year-old living in Brampton was originally from India and is survived by his father who still lives overseas.
Mandeep has started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to pay for funeral expenses and to help send Amritpal’s body back to India that has already received nearly $10,000 in donations.
The fatal crash led police to arrest the driver of the vehicle after officers determined his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.
The OPP said Karanvir Singh, 23, of Brampton, has been charged with impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm and obstructing a peace officer. He was held for a bail hearing.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Caledon OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be provided through Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
