Famed American entrepreneur and TV personality Mark Cuban is joining the ownership group of the Brampton Honey Badgers, adding a high-profile name to the local basketball franchise.

Cuban — the former owner of the Dallas Mavericks and a longtime panellist on Shark Tank — is expected to have his role with the team formally announced on May 7. Details about his position have not yet been disclosed.

Under Cuban’s ownership, the Mavericks won the NBA championship in 2011.

The Honey Badgers are heading into their eighth season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League and their fourth based in Brampton. The team is also owned by Leonard Asper, who has an existing business relationship with Cuban through Anthem Sports & Entertainment Corp.

Newly appointed CEO Al Whitley also brings a longstanding connection to Cuban, having served as a special advisor with the Mavericks for more than two decades.

The move comes as the Honey Badgers look to build momentum ahead of the 2026 season. In recent weeks, the team has added Nav Bhatia — widely known as the “Raptors Superfan” — as a community ambassador in an effort to boost local engagement.

On the court, the roster will feature several hometown players, including Matthew Moncrieffe, Bronson Chambers and Danilo Djuricic.

The Honey Badgers open their 2026 campaign on May 15 against the Ottawa BlackJacks, followed by a May 17 matchup with the Calgary Surge. The team plays its home games at the CAA Centre.

The CEBL season runs from May through August, with the Honey Badgers among the league’s original franchises.
