A nanny who arrived in Canada to provide child care wound up in hospital with a noxious drug in her system, and her employer is now facing sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation charges after a six-month investigation.
The victim had contacted an Oshawa couple with several children via a Facebook au pair group to come to Canada to work informally as an au pair. She arrived last December and lived with the suspect and his spouse at their home in exchange for providing child care.
On Dec. 12, police were told that the suspect gave her ice cream, and soon after consuming it, she reported feeling incoherent and eventually going unconscious, with no recollection of the night. The victim sought medical attention and it was later confirmed that a noxious drug was present in her system.
In early 2026, a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence. Police allege that several electronic devices, as well as the same drug used in the offence, were located and seized.
Police also allege that evidence of child sexual abuse and exploitation materials was found.
On Wednesday, investigators with the Special Victims Unit took the suspect into custody.
Derek Stephen Bellamy, 38, has been charged with sexual assault, administering a noxious substance, five counts of voyeurism, five counts of possession of a recording obtained by voyeurism and two counts of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
He was held for a bail hearing.
Investigators have concerns that there are additional victims, and anyone with information about this or similar incidents is asked to contact Det. Dunbar of the Special Victims Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5344.
