Homicide investigators have identified the victim found after a residential fire in downtown Oshawa.

Amaar Jawaid, 22, is the fifth victim of homicide in Durham Region so far this year.

Jawaid was found after Oshawa firefighters extinguished a “suspicious” house fire on Court Street, just south of the Tribute Communities Centre, on the morning of March 6. Jawaid, who was unidentified at the time of his discovery, was found with “unspecified trauma” by police and fire officials, with police immediately upgrading the case to a murder investigation.

The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office had already declared the fire to be arson.

Anyone with new information is asked to contact A/Det. Gill of the Major Crimes Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5407.
