A man is in custody on murder charges after a stabbing in Uxbridge last week.

Durham Regional Police received a call shortly before 9 a.m. on January 12 regarding an attack in Uxbridge. Officers responded to a home on Allbright Road, about 10 minutes southeast of the Town of Uxbridge proper. The road sits just outside the Coppin’s Corners hamlet.

When the officers arrived they learned John Genereux, 66, had been stabbed by a known suspect. The officers arrested 37 year-old Matthew Lavis at the scene.

First responders rushed Genereux to a Toronto hospital for treatment of what was life-threatening injuries. He died in hospital January 16.

Lavis was since charged with second-degree murder.

Police have not commented on any connection between the victim and the suspect, or the circumstances of the attack on Genereux.

Genereux’s murder is the first homicide in Durham Region in 2023. His death comes less than six weeks after the murder of Tiel-Lyn Cook, 19, the 15th and final murder of 2022.

Last year’s first murder in Durham Region came on January 3, 2022 with the death of Saeid Mabrok Saeed Salem, 20.
