Murder charge for Mississauga man after Ontario home invasion leaves a father dead

A Mississauga man has been charged with first-degree murder and a Toronto teen is being hunted by police on the same charge in connection with a late-August home invasion in Vaughan that left a 46-year-old father dead.

Amir Wiam Mohammad Abuhmaid, 26, of Mississauga, also faces several other charges in addition to the murder charge, York Regional Police said Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators with York’s homicide squad said they’re also seeking a 16-year-old Toronto boy on a charge of first-degree murder and other alleged offences. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Four others — two Toronto men and a pair of 16-year-olds from Toronto — also face charges in connection with the investigation. One of the men is charged with accessory after the fact of robbery with a firearm while the other three are charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Abdul Aleem Farooqi, 46, died from gunshot wounds after at least three male suspects broke into his Vaughan home around 1 a.m. on Aug. 31, police said earlier.

Police said officers who responded to the scene of the home invasion in the area of Andreeta Drive and Barons Street arrived to find a man inside the house suffering from gunshot wounds.

“Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a news release on Wednesday afternoon.

Police added the investigation “remains active, with suspects still outstanding.”

The Mississauga man charged with first-degree murder has also been charged with:

• breaking and entering with intent
• robbery with firearm
• possession of property obtained by crime over
  $5,000
• breach of probation
