A Brampton man has been charged after police say he set fire to a basement apartment, killing his elderly roommate.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (July 2) according to Peel Regional Police, who say officers were called to a home in the 20 block of Pennyroyal Cres. for reports of a basement fire.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they found an 80-year-old man in the unit who was suffering from “obvious signs of trauma,” police said.
Police said the elderly man was found without vital signs at the home but was resuscitated and rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died a short while later.
Now police say the deceased man’s 26-year-old roommate has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the blaze.
Julius Adigun, 26, of Brampton was arrested on Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder and arson endangering life. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
The blaze was the second of at least three fatal fires in Brampton over the last week.
One person died in a house fire in the area of Treeline Blvd. and Airport Rd. on Friday, and a female died following a blaze in the area of Jade Cres. and Jayfield Rd. on Monday.
