Movie Nights back at Celebration Square in Mississauga.

Mississauga is once again getting ready to go to the movies, with a bit of a twist.

Forget the traditional indoor movie theatre for a while — the wildly popular Celebration Square Movie Nights, this year presented by insauga.com, return to the huge outdoor space in Mississauga’s downtown core for the summer.

“Grab a blanket and head over to the city’s largest outdoor movie theatre to enjoy an incredible movie lineup under the stars, featuring everything from animated hits to live action blockbusters,” City of Mississauga officials said in a news release today.

The Thursday outdoor movie nights, which organizers note are perfect for family outings, are free to all and also accessible. Closed-captioning is displayed during the film screenings on both digital screens in Celebration Square and assistive listening devices are available upon request.

In past years, the event has drawn thousands of people each Thursday. They set up their lawn chairs, lay out their blankets and bring out the snacks to watch a movie under the stars.

Pre-show starts at 7:30 p.m. with movies beginning at 8 p.m. each week.

The action gets underway on Thursday, July 4 with a screening of Kung Fu Panda. Final movie of the summer will be shown on Sept. 5.

Here’s the 2024 lineup:

  • Thursday, July 4 – Kung Fu Panda 4 (G)
  • July 11 — no movie
  • July 18 – PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (PG)
  • July 25 – Barbie (PG)
  • Aug. 1 – Nimona (PG), courtesy of Netflix
  • Aug.  8 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (PG)
  • Aug. 15 – Wonka (PG)
  • Aug. 22 – Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (PG)
  • Aug. 29 – Trolls Band Together (G)
  • Sept.  5 – The Mitchells vs. The Machines (PG), courtesy of Netflix

Organizers said the movies and schedules are subject to change. The movies are shown weather permitting.

For those who need specific accommodations, call 311 at least 48 hours in advance of the event to make the request.

The movie nights are just one thing going on at Celebration Square this spring, summer and into the fall, officials note.

“From diverse festivals and outdoor fitness sessions to captivating movies and lively concerts, there’s something for everyone,” they said in their release.

In addition to a wide array of free festivals that book up nearly every weekend, daily fitness programs and water play in the fountain/wading pool, the Lions Farmers Market, live music, events for kids such as Open Air Storytime and live sports events on the big screen are all on tap as well.
