A motion for alternative voting methods in next year’s Municipal election was recently carried by Milton Town Council.

At the meeting on Oct. 25, a report providing an overview of voting methods used in Ontario municipal elections was reviewed. Additionally, Town staff’s recommendations for the 2022 Municipal Election, which will take place on October 24, 2022, were also discussed.

Town staff’s recommendations included the continued use of vote tabulators with paper ballots at in-person voting locations. Additionally, staff recommended that a remote vote by mail option for eligible voters be implemented during the election period at the discretion of the Town Clerk.

They also recommend that only one remote method be offered at this time for the 2022 Municipal Election.

Before each municipal election, the Municipal Elections Act (MEA) allows councils of local municipalities to pass bylaws such as the authorization for the use of voting and vote-counting equipment and the authorization of electors as an alternative voting method.

As a result, staff sought out Council’s direction about voting equipment and methods for the 2022 Municipal Election in order to plan ahead.

At the meeting, a motion was carried to adopt the necessary bylaw to support the use of vote tabulators in the 2022 Municipal Election and that the necessary bylaw be adopted to support the use of vote by mail as an alternative voting method.
