The province's fire marshall is investigating after two people were killed in a house fire in Caledon on Canada Day.

A 6-year-old girl from Caledon who loved animals and her 35-year-old mother have been identified as the victims in a deadly blaze on Canada Day.

Around 6:40 a.m. on the morning of Canada Day, the Caledon OPP say officers and members of Caledon Fire and Emergency Services were called to a home on Mountainview Rd. near Hwy 9 in Caledon.

When emergency crews arrived they found a residence fully engulfed in flames. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes, but two people were unaccounted for.

Two victims were later recovered from the scene and pronounced dead.

Police have identified the victims as 35-year-old Jenny Bullock of Caledon and her 6-year-old daughter, Ellie Wratten.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the fire, which is not being considered suspicious.

A memorial webpage to Wratten says the young girl “was a huge lover of the outdoors and enjoyed swimming and horseback riding most of all.”

“She was a lover of animals and horses, dogs and butterflies were her favourite of them,” Wratten’s obituary reads. “Though Ellie’s life was far too brief, her memory lives on in her family and friends.”

After the deadly blaze, Caledon Fire Chief David Forfar urged all residents to test their smoke alarms and make an escape plan “with two ways out” in case of fire.

“Caledon Fire urges all residents to test their smoke alarms and make an escape plan with two ways out. We encourage the public to contact us for any assistance needed regarding fire safety,” Forfar said in a statement.
