More people clicking on remote positions while searching for work

 

With more and more businesses electing to close shop and have their employees work from home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, many workers are trying to adjust to the transition on the fly.

Additionally, those whose companies haven’t been fortunate enough to continue operating with employees working from home have been looking for jobs to supplement their income while they’ve been out of work.

According to a release from Indeed, job searches including the words “remote,” “work from home,” and “teletravail” have more than doubled over the past two weeks.

Further, on March 18, 1.2 per cent of all job searches in Canada were for positions that would be done from home—an increase of 103 per cent since late February.

Moreover, those looking for remote work are more likely to click on positions in customer service, telemarketing, and as assistants, roles where interaction over the phone or video-conference is fairly straightforward.

While job postings for positions such as social media managers, tutors, and full-stack developers have been receiving a significantly larger-than-normal boost in interest.

“As job seekers, workers and workplaces grapple with the implications of social distancing, interest in remote work will likely keep rising,” Brendon Bernard, economist at Indeed Canada, said in the release.

“The growth of remote work may be a long-term trend, but this immediate shift is going to be a tough transition for some, especially those with kids home from school. However, workers with roles that can’t be done from home are in the toughest situation, facing risks to both their job security and own health. The increase in interest in remote work shows some job seekers looking to make the best of a bad situation,” he continued.
