It can’t be? Is that really him? Perhaps you rubbed your eyes a couple of times and even squinted. You swear it was Jason Momoa standing outside of the old Centennial Pool in Oakville last summer.

It certainly was Momoa. The big time movie star and hunk was in town filming Slumberland.

The Netflix film, starring Momoa, Chris O’Dowd and Marlow Barkley, was shot in Oakville, Whitby, Whistler and Toronto beginning in February of 2021 and wrapping up in May of the same year.

Other local filming locations includes the Lighthouse at Lakeside Park and Oakville Museum.

In an update shared Friday (Dec. 16) on Netflix in Your Neighbourhood, the two Oakville locations were added to the site as tourism destinations for Netflix fans.

Created by Netflix, the site gives fans, both local and from around the world, the opportunity to find and explore some of the Canadian filming locations for many of its most popular films and series.

Momoa didn’t hesitate when asked about what he loved about filming in Canada.

“Canadians,” he said on Netflix in Your Neighbourhood. “Everyone is extremely, extremely nice.”

The star of Aquaman, Conan The Barbarian, Braven and the Justice League, Momoa raved about his stay in Toronto.

“It’s very artsy,” he said of the city. “The food is amazing, very diverse culture.”

He loved the food so much, he made sure he can enjoy it whenever he’s filming around the world.

“I actually stole the chef from a restaurant in Toronto,” Momoa told Netflix. “He now lives with me and I travel the world with him. You just collect people from around the world that you love and, I guess, just build my tribe.”

In the movie, a young girl named Nemo (Barkley), discovers a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland and with the help of Flip (Momoa), an eccentric outlaw, Nemo traverses dreams and flees.

Based on Winsor McCay’s comic strip “Little Nemo in Slumberland,” Nemo is sent to live with her awkward uncle, Philip, after losing her father, Peter, in the open sea.

She struggles to fit in, but when she falls asleep she dreams of the magical world where she meets Flip.

Barkley loved how people recognized Momoa when they saw him filming here in Canada.

“People walking by and they were like, ‘Jason Momoa!,’ or like ‘What are you guys filming?,'” Barkley said on Netflix in Your Neighbourhood.  “So, we’re kind of interacting with them, but then also filming outside.

“It felt really nice, it felt really safe and I felt really comfortable there.”

Slumberland was released by Netflix on Nov. 9 of this year.
