Mohawk College in Hamilton launches new game design program with focus on ethics
Mohawk College in Hamilton launched a new program, looking to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing and ever-evolving game design industry.

Mohawk College in Hamilton is looking to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing and ever-evolving game design industry.

Mohawk says its new three-year advanced diploma game design program will also focus on “breaking down barriers and creating gaming content that reflects today’s more diverse and inclusive society.”

While the college’s new program will provide students with the design, technical, and artistic skills used in game production, it also includes an ethics course that explores both the content of games and workplace dynamics.

“This program creates a talent pipeline that will feed directly into the growing digital media and game design industry in Ontario, Hamilton and the surrounding region,” said Sylvia Lowndes, Dean of McKeil School of Business | School of Creative Industries, Liberal Studies & Communication. “Digital media is one of Hamilton’s fastest-growing tech sectors, and this program will train Future Ready graduates who can find promising new careers in this exciting industry.”

According to Mohawk, the leadership team that developed the program is largely composed of female academics.

“This program will offer students a healthy understanding of how the content they create can impact users and will reinforce the importance of supporting a positive and collaborative work environment,” said Dr. Angela Stukator, the special advisor co-leading the development of the program along with Associate Dean Dr. Lisa Funnell.

“This program is intended to model rather than mirror the gaming industry.”

The advanced diploma game design program at Mohawk College will accept its first class of students in Sept. 2023, with registration opening this October.
