Mohawk College Foundation appeals to public to help raise $110,000 for students
Increasing housing, grocery, and travel expenses have forced more and more students into a position of financial insecurity as they try to pursue their college education. Mohawk College says 45 per cent of its students require financial assistance to continue their studies.

With Giving Tuesday around the corner, the Mohawk College Foundation is appealing to Hamilton and the broader community to help raise $110,000 for student assistance.

Donations made on Nov. 29 will be matched by the foundation.

Increasing housing, grocery, and travel expenses have forced more and more students into a position of financial insecurity as they try to pursue their college education. Mohawk College says 45 per cent of its students require financial assistance to continue their studies.

“Mohawk College students face many serious challenges at this point in history as they pursue their education. We are committed to supporting them, in and out of the classroom, as they work toward their graduation and promising careers in the workforce,” said Ron McKerlie, Mohawk College CEO and president of the foundation.

“I am proud that 100 per cent of our college and foundation leaders have committed to supporting students through this appeal. Our college employees are unified in our support of student success.”

The Mohawk College Foundation appealed similarly in 2021, focusing more on student food insecurity.

Food prices have risen more than ten per cent year-over-year in Canada.

Meanwhile, Hamilton rental prices have increased 13.3 per cent for a one-bedroom and 15.6 per cent for a two-bedroom compared to the same time last year.

Leaders from Mohawk College and the Mohawk College Foundation report that they’ve collectively pledged up to $55,000 for student support.

“For too many of our students, tuition, rent, food, child care, part-time work, transportation, and mental health challenges are impacting their studies and causing them to question their ability to continue their education,” said Lorna Somers, Executive Director of the Mohawk College Foundation and one of the matching donors. The college leadership has demonstrated a strong commitment to helping students. Now, through this appeal, we are asking the Hamilton community to join us.”

”Together, we can help students stay in school and reduce the stress around the costs of tuition, books, rent and food so they can focus on their academic goals.”

Through this matching-gift appeal, donors can support students through the gift catalogue, which allows donors to provide students with funds for college essentials, housing expenses, child support, nutrition, and more.

According to the college, nearly three out of four students reported worrying about their finances. More than 40 per cent of post-secondary students say stress has affected their academic performance, and around 16 per cent have seriously considered suicide.
