It is “grazie e arrivederci” for the oldest Italian restaurant in Mississauga.

The Aielli-Alto restaurant on Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit has closed its doors, owner Louis Macerola said in a farewell posting shared on the resturant’s website. The well-reviewed restaurant that was distinguished by hand-painted frescoes, a varied wine cellar, open kitchen and a patio in the warmer months had been serving Italian cuisine since 1973.

“To all our staff, suppliers and loyal customers from the last four decades, we want to say thank you and goodbye,” Macerola wrote.

“We wish we had the opportunity to reach out to all of you in person to say thanks for the memories, the friendships and the joy you have given us serving the community. We also would like to thank the Village of Port Credit for a perfect environment to operate a small business.”

Colossus Greek Restaurant is moving into the space at 286 Lakeshore Rd. E. that Aielli-Alto had occupied for nearly a quarter-century. Macerola said he will still be present next door at Maranello Café, an Italian eatery that is located at 286C Lakeshore Rd. E.

Maranello Café is offering takeout and delivery, and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. It is reachable at 905-278-2184
