Mattel —a toy company unveiled its newest collection of dolls and its creation was inspired by the highly anticipated Barbie movie hitting theatres next month, starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Mississauga’s own Simu Liu.

One of the dolls features the Chinese Canadian actor’s “Ken” dressed in a gold and white disco tracksuit—a replica of the outfit worn in the film.

In a recent post on Instagram Liu shared pictures of the doll including a shot of him holding the figurine and looking at it with adoration.

It seemed like Liu was blown away by the doll version of his character that his caption to the photos was a simple “Whoa.”

Immediately after the actor shared the post—there was a huge discussion in the comment section.

Many applauded Simu’s doll as a representation win, although his isn’t the first Asian Ken doll. (That title, apparently, belongs to Samurai Ken, which hit shelves a decade ago.)

“You know You have made it when You have Your own Barbie. So Happy for You !!!” wrote one excited fan.

Another user was glad to see diversity amongst the dolls, “10 years ago would you ever have thought that you’d be a Ken doll?! #representationmatters

While there was a large outpour of positive words and praises, some fans expressed their dissatisfaction of the doll not looking like Liu at all.

“I love the moment and what this means but who the F did they model this on??!! Zero resemblance” wrote one person.

Another user went straight for the dolls hair saying it didn’t do his “real coif” justice.

According to Mattel, “all the dolls in the collection features looks fans will see in the movie, reflecting the signature styles of Barbie, Ken, and new characters as they traverse through Barbie Land and beyond.”
