Bianca Andreescu’s journey back to the upper ranks of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) circuit can best be described as a bit of a rollercoaster ride to date.

This morning (June 30) in London, the 22-year-old Mississaugan experienced a dip along the way in falling 4-6, 6-7 to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in second-round action at Wimbledon.

The loss eliminated Andreescu, the WTA’s No. 56 ranked player, from the prestigious tournament.

Meanwhile, Rybakina, 23, WTA No. 23 and the tournament’s 17th seed, advances to third-round action later this week.

Andreescu started the tournament off on the right foot by besting American Emina Bektas 6-1, 6-3 in opening-round play on Tuesday.

The Mississauga athlete had a strong showing at the Bad Homburg Open tournament in Germany last week, advancing to the final before losing.

That Wimbledon tuneup performance improved Andreescu’s WTA ranking from No. 64 to No. 56.

She was looking for her first tournament win since bursting onto the WTA scene with a victory at the US Open in 2019 over Serena Williams. However, she fell just short in the final.

Still, it was a positive that Andreescu reached the final in Germany. She had the opportunity to work on her game that much more in preparation for Wimbledon as she continues the long road back to what she hopes will be the upper echelons of the women’s tennis circuit.

Andreescu’s performance in Germany represents a huge step forward on her journey to once again being considered among the world’s top tennis players.

The Mississauga tennis star, once ranked as high as No. 4 in the world after winning the US Open in 2019, continues to make her way back from a lengthy injury/mental health break on the WTA circuit.

She burst onto the world tennis scene with that surprise US Open win and told media last month at the Italian Open that the past few years have been tough for her, but she’s slowly “getting to my top form” again.
