Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu was defeated in third-round action last night (March 13) at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California by the world’s best women’s singles tennis player.

That’s the bad news for the 22-year-old Andreescu as her up-and-down journey back to what she hopes will be a place among the elite of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)  continues.

The not-so-bad news is that the Mississauga native, ranked No. 36 in the world, was competitive and gave the world’s far-and-away No. 1 player, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, a tough match.

In the end, though, Swiatek came out on top 6-3, 7-6 against Andreescu, the WTA’s top-ranked Canadian.

Swiatek is defending champion of the tournament while Andreescu won at Indian Wells during a storybook year in 2019 in which she also captured a Grand Slam event U.S. Open to burst onto the international tennis scene in memorable fashion.

However, since then Andreescu has faced a difficult journey, taking an extended break from tennis before returning in early 2022.

After her 2019 U.S. Open win, she was ranked No. 4 in the world.
