A Mississauga school teacher is seriously ill and in the hospital with COVID-19.

The union representing teachers with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board confirmed reports Friday that a local teacher was in the hospital.

The teacher is among five staff members and 10 students the Catholic board is reporting that have tested positive for COVID-19 in an outbreak at St. Sofia Byzantine Catholic Elementary School in Mississauga.

“One of our elementary teachers is seriously ill in hospital,” the Dufferin Peel Secondary Unit said in a statement released Friday afternoon. “It is our understanding that the illness was contracted at work. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

“We also know that the other staff and students have been impacted and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

St. Sofia, located at 3540 Havenwoood Dr., closed its doors on Mar. 4 and moved classes online. Four days later Peel Public Health declared an outbreak.

Peel Public Health and the DPCDSB made a recent announcement that closure of the school will continue from March 15 to March 29.
