Winter maintenance crews in Mississauga say they’re out in force this afternoon (Feb. 22) treating major roads in the city prior to rush hour and the big winter blast that’s expected to arrive this evening.

Getting out ahead of the major storm’s arrival will allow City of Mississauga salt trucks to make roads that much safer for drivers once the snow and ice pellets/freezing rain do hit the city and much of the GTA in the coming hours.

According to Environment Canada, which issued the winter storm warning for Mississauga and Brampton, the storm is expected to arrive in full force Wednesday evening and last into Thursday.

Snow and ice pellets, with total amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres of the white stuff in most areas, are both on the way, forecasters say.

Freezing rain is also expected to be part of the wintry mix.

Light snow and ice pellets will become heavy at times late Wednesday afternoon into early Wednesday evening. Snow and ice pellets may mix with or intermittently change over to freezing rain Wednesday night.

The wintry mix will taper off early Thursday morning to a risk of patchy freezing drizzle, forecasters say.

Another light wintry mix of precipitation is possible Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.
