A 27-year-old Mississauga resident has been charged with careless driving after the car they were travelling in with a passenger lost control, entered a ravine and wound up underwater southeast of London on Saturday night (Aug. 27).

Elgin County OPP say the vehicle was travelling westbound along Tunnel Line in Bayham, about 60 kilometres southeast of London and just south of Tillsonburg, at about 6 p.m. when the driver lost control.

“As result, the vehicle entered a ravine and became submerged in water. Emergency services arrived on scene and were able to safely extricate both people,” OPP said in a news release.

The passenger is also a 27-year-old Mississauga resident. Police didn’t say if the two people involved are men or women.

They were taken to hospital as a precaution, police say.

In addition to police, Bayham firefighters and Elgin County paramedics also responded to the scene.

The driver was subsequently charged with careless driving.
