Mississauga will install 55 new bicycle parking racks across the city this year after cyclists told city officials they needed more secure places to lock up their two-wheeled modes of transportation.

“Mississauga residents are telling us they want more safe, secure and accessible bike parking racks, and we are listening,” City officials said. “We’ve made it easier to request new racks and increase the number and location of bike racks throughout the city.”

Through the City’s Bike Parking Program, residents can request new locations for bike racks or report damaged racks in need of replacement or repair

“The program helps cyclists feel confident that reliable bike parking will be available at their favourite Mississauga destinations. It also helps increase the number of trips residents and visitors take by bike,” officials say, adding availability of parking plays a significant role in creating a “connected, convenient and comfortable cycling network.”

Officials say information collected via the program will help them develop bike parking inventory and better understand the life cycle of City bike racks.

Residents can ask the City for new bike racks at places that include sidewalks, boulevards, City parks and City-owned buildings such as libraries and community centres, in addition to MiWay transit terminals and public spaces such as Celebration Square.

To request new bike racks or report damaged ones, residents can call 311 or visit the City of Mississauga’s website.

Before installing a new rack, the City will consider:

  • the requested location and surrounding area
  • space and accessibility
  • existing bike parking and cycling infrastructure
