The city of Mississauga is no stranger when it comes to astronomically high auto insurance rates.

A recent Kanetix.ca reports that this is by a wide margin in the entire province as well, with Mississauga taking the third spot for premiums.

Using Kanetix.ca’s InsuraMap, the average Ontario auto insurance premium was estimated to be $1,473, $157 more than the $1,316 at the end of 2017.

For comparison’s sake, however, Brampton pays $408 more than Mississauga in premiums, the former of which came in at first on the list.

At the moment, while where one lives no doubt plays a huge factor in determining insurance premiums, (note that the more often insurance claims happen in a city or locale, the higher this will reflect in one’s premium), hope may be on the horizon.

The provincial government’s 2018 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review attempts to explore a variety of ways to lower rates, including potentially eliminating geography-based pricing.

Legislation has also already been introduced, in the form of Bill 42. If passed, postal codes will no longer play a factor in what a person pays for coverage.

For now, however, there are ways one can attempt to lower their auto insurance rates. The obvious being maintaining a clean driving record, and also purchasing your auto insurance and home insurance policies from the same provider can provide savings of 5 to 15 per cent.

Increasing your policy deductibles can also save up to 10 per cent. Just emsure your deductibles are at an amount you can comfortably afford, since this is the portion of a claim that one has to cover out of their own wallet.

Do the findings about the city paying the highest in auto insurance rates surprise you, Mississauga?
