Update: Late Monday, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott was reelected Speaker, defeating Mississauga-Streetsville MPP Nina Tangri.

Mississauga-Streetsville MPP Nina Tangri is looking to raise her profile significantly as a member of Ontario’s Conservative government.

Tangri, who also serves as associate minister of small business and red tape reduction, is seeking to become Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, which is back in session this week. She was named to the associate minister’s post during Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet shuffle in June 2021.

Provincial politicians returned to Ontario’s legislature today (Aug. 8) and the first order of business is electing a Speaker.

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott has served as Speaker for the past four years. Now, Tangri is vying for the job as well.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are continuing to press the Tory government for more solutions to the healthcare staffing crisis on the eve of tomorrow’s (Aug. 9) throne speech.

Tuesday’s speech will outline the government’s agenda and that will be followed by the unveiling of the latest provincial budget.

On June 2, Tangri and her five Mississauga Tory colleagues were all reelected as the city remained entirely blue, politically speaking.
