Mississauga Marvel star Simu Liu hosting celebrity charity basketball game

Mississauga’s very own superhero Simu Liu will be taking it to the hoop for a celebrity charity basketball game next month.

The Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association will host the 2022 CCYAA Celebrity Classic in July, featuring Liu as well as former Toronto Raptors star Jeremy Lin and over a dozen celebrities, athletes and personalities from the North American Asian community.

While the full list of guests has yet to be released, Liu said on Instagram that some of the roster will include comedians Hasan Minhaj and Ronny Chieng, and filmmaker Philip Wang.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Jeremy Lin Foundation and the CCYAA, and Liu said he’s excited to help bring the Celebrity Classic back to Toronto “in a much bigger and better way than ever before.”

“It was a celebration of diasporic Asian culture that brought together some incredible actors, musicians and influencers from around the world – and all in support of two very worthwhile causes,” Liu said in a release. “This year, we’re celebrating Asian Americans and Canadians who have broken barriers and achieved success in Hollywood, pro sports, music, comedy and food.”

The game runs at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at the University of Toronto’s Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

The former star of CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience, Liu has become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rising stars.

In the last year, the Mississauga native has hosted the Juno Awards and an episode of Saturday Night Live, won a pair of People’s Choice awards and was selected as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2022.
