Thousands of runners will take to the streets this weekend for the Mississauga Marathon.

Held annually since 2004, the Mississauga Marathon has become one of Canada’s premier running events, organizers say.

“We have created a unique experience for each and every participant of all ages and abilities while at the same time encouraging healthy, active lifestyles, community involvement and charitable giving,” Landmark Sport Group Inc., which has organized the event since the beginning, says on the marathon’s website.

Various marathon events take place throughout the weekend, but the main attraction–the 42-kilometre Mississauga Marathon–goes Sunday morning (May 1).

Starting at Celebration Square in the city’s downtown core, the scenic full-marathon course will take participants on a fast, challenging route that includes a cross-over of the Credit River to Mississauga Rd.

Runners will then continue by the University of Toronto Mississauga campus, then near the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club and a number of beautiful residential neighbourhoods that lead to the picturesque Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail.

The race then concludes at Lakefront Promenade Park.

Race organizers note that small inclines are found at the 10- and 24-km marks of the route, which is described as a “net downhill” course.

There’s a 250-foot drop in elevation from the start of the course to its finish, organizers add. Due to the rate of decline being greater than one metre per kilometre, Athletics Canada cannot certify any record times run on the Mississauga course.

The Mississauga Marathon does, however, serve as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
