A 47-year-old man in Mississauga faces three counts of attempted murder in relation to what police considered to be an intimate-partner-violence incident on Monday.

The victims include a woman who is in life-threatening condition, and her two children who are both under age 12. The accused’s name has not been released. However, the Peel Regional Police intimate partner violence unit has confirmed that they have laid a dozen charges against the man.

Peel police also say they are sensitive to the fact that the witnesses to the disturbance call who have their own experiences with gendered and intimate-partner violence might have felt trauma during and following the events. A police press release provided several resources for residents.

“This incident has had a devastating impact on the survivors of yesterday’s events as well as those who witnessed the incident, community members and first responders,” Deputy Chief of Investigative and Emergency Services Nick Milinovich stated.

“Peel Regional Police is committed to working alongside our community partners and organizations to provide awareness, resources and support to survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, whether they have been identified or not. We can all work together to amplify helpful, available resources and accessible, safe spaces to report incidents of domestic violence. “

At approximately 10 a.m. on March 7, Peel police received a 911 call for a disturbance in a residential neighbourhood in the area of Southampton Drive and Eglinton Avenue West. The responding officers located a woman outside a residence with apparent signs of trauma. She was transported to a trauma centre, and remained in life-threatening condition at last report.

The two children were transported to a local hospital, then the older child was taken to a trauma centre in serious, stable, non-life-threatening condition. The younger child had no physical injuries.

An officer discharged their firearm during the incident, although it is not believed that the suspect was struck. That has led to the Ontario Special Investigations Unit opening an investigation.

The man has been charged with

  • Three counts of attempted murder
  • Three counts of aggravated assault
  • Three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Three counts of uttering threats.

The man has been remanded into custody after appearing remotely in a Brampton court.

Peel police say they are working to make sure that the three survivors are receiving “wrap-around supports” after a life-and-death ordeal.

“Our Intimate Partner Violence Unit investigators have been involved with this case since the onset of it occurring,” stated Inspector Lisa Hewison, Officer in Charge of Crimes Against Persons for Peel Regional Police.

“Our team has worked collaboratively with our community partners to ensure wrap-around supports and services are in place for the female survivor and her children. We will continue to engage with her and her children as they continue to heal.”
