A Mississauga man with “an extensive criminal driving history” who’s been banned from getting behind the wheel for life is now facing additional charges.

Officers with the Peel Regional Police Road Safety Services team arrested the man after an investigation that was launched last month.

Police describe the man as “a repeat offender with an extensive criminal driving history,” saying he was on house arrest with numerous lifetime driving prohibitions due to criminal code convictions when they began their investigation in March.

Rafael Maia, 35, is charged with:

  • fail to comply with release order (four counts)
  • operation while prohibited (six counts)
  • drive while under suspension (three counts)

His vehicle was impounded for 45 days, and he was held for a bail hearing in Brampton court.

The Road Safety Services’ Safer Roads Team investigates prolific offenders and is vigilant in its goal of keeping dangerous drivers off the streets, police say.

“I would like to assure the public that all investigative avenues will be utilized to prevent road violence and investigate prolific suspended drivers that pose an increased risk to public safety within our community,” said Peel police Road Safety Services Inspector Pete Danos.
