Mississauga driver charged in hit-and-run that killed a man sleeping on a sidewalk in Toronto

A Mississauga driver faces charges in a hit-and-run that killed a man in Toronto in mid-November.

The man, reportedly a 57-year-old unhoused person, was sleeping on the southeast corner of Scott Street at Wellington Street, on Nov. 14 around 6:40 a.m. when he was hit by an SUV, Toronto Police said in a press release.

The black SUV was travelling northbound on Scott Street, the driver stopped at Wellington Street East but then proceeded north on Scott Street mounting a curb.

The SUV struck the 57-year-old man. The man was reportedly dragged for a short distance and then left there as the driver fled the scene.

The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police released photos of the suspect vehicle, believed to be a black Ford Expedition.

Tips from the public led police to the driver and vehicle involved on Nov. 14.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6 police charged Olateju Ogunwomoju, 63, of Mississauga with fail to stop at an accident causing death, police said.

Ogunwomoju is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury St. in Toronto on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.
