Mississauga cyclists looking for more convenient spots to park their bikes can tell City officials exactly where they’d like to see more parking racks.

The City of Mississauga’s Bike Parking Program, which installed 42 racks at high-traffic locations across the city last year, is encouraging cyclists to speak up about where additional racks might be needed.

“Where would you like more bike parking? You can request bike racks on City sidewalks, parks, buildings, transit terminals and more,” City officials said in a post to Twitter this week.

MiWay terminals and Celebration Square in the downtown core are just a couple of examples of where cyclists might want to see more parking.

Residents can call 311, use Pingstreet or submit an online request for additional bike racks. The Pingstreet App can be easily downloaded free of charge and used by residents to submit various requests to the City.

The annual Bike Parking Program was developed by transportation and works staff at the City in an effort to increase “the amount of safe, secure and accessible bicycle parking” throughout Mississauga.

The program also allows people to report damaged racks in need of replacement or repair.

“Bicycle parking is an important part of a connected, convenient and comfortable cycling network,” the City says, adding cyclists “…must be confident that there will be a safe and secure place to park at their destinations.”

City officials add that bike parking racks can be installed “where suitable based on a citywide priority basis as funding allows.”

Information collected via the program will also help officials develop bike parking inventory and better understand the life cycle of City bike racks.

The City also offers a bike valet service at various events. Officials say it works much like a coat check, but for bicycles.

“Just hand your bike and accessories to one of our staff and get a ticket. On your way out, return the stub and we give you your items back,” officials say.

Requests for the valet service at events can also be made by calling 311 or online.

Those who want to submit an online request for bike parking, valet service and other services can do so here.
