Mississauga Ward 4 councillor John Kovac introduced a notice of motion to council on Wednesday (Oct. 23) that would see speed limits in school zones dropped to 30 km/h.

In the notice, Kovac points to recent provincial legislation which allowed municipalities across the province to reduce speed limits in neighbourhoods from 50 km/h to 40.

Mississauga has, as a result, started to reduce the speed limit in some city neighbourhoods.

The notice calls for there to be a ‘distinction’ between neighbourhood roads and School Zones in terms of speed limits to increase safety in these areas.

Kovac asked that “staff be directed to review the establishing of 30/km/h zones in School Zones within the city of Mississauga,” and that a report be prepared for the General Issues Committee.

An amendment to the notice also asked for input on the city’s Road Safety Committee.

In a tweet sent out Wednesday afternoon, Kovac praised the decision to approve the notice of motion and thanked his fellow councillor, Karen Vaux Ras, for seconding the motion and all of council for “supporting #VisionZero and improved School Zone safety!”
