Mississauga celebrates local black leaders at virtual event

Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Mississauga’s Black Caucus are hosting a virtual forum tonight (Feb. 24) that celebrates local black leaders and their stories.
The online event is open to the public and runs from 6 to 8 p.m. It’s part of the City of Mississauga’s Black History Month celebration.
Joining Mississauga’s mayor and members of the caucus at the virtual event are guests that include: Toronto Argos’ general manager Mike “Pinball” Clemons, a widely popular personality for more than two decades in the GTA and beyond; Canadian R&B singer Luna Elle, 16, of Mississauga; popular radio and TV personality Kevin Carrington; and Canadian MP Greg Fergus.
Members of the public are invited to attend the virtual session.
At Mississauga City council last week, Crombie tabled a motion, which was passed unanimously, that Mississauga recognize the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (2015 to 2024).
City officials say that is particularly important to the mayor given the work she’s doing with Mississauga’s Black Caucus on equity and inclusion.
The Black Caucus was formed last year by Crombie. It’s an advisory body composed of black members of the community who work with the mayor on issues pertaining to racism, discrimination and systemic changes in Mississauga.
Part of the motion also committed the City of Mississauga to do more to celebrate the achievements of the black community.
I'm hosting a #BlackHistoryMonth celebration in partnership with the Black Caucus where we'll be highlighting inspiring local Black leaders from various walks of life – all are welcome to attend!
