Ontario Premier Doug Ford tours a new mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the International Centre in Mississauga on Dec. 24, 2021.

Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon are reporting their lowest new COVID-19 case count since the start of the Omicron surge as the province eased restrictions across Ontario on Monday.

And while the province’s changes to testing availability and eligibility have caused case counts to be under reported, COVID-19 hospitalizations in Ontario are also on the decline.

On Monday, Peel Public Health (PPH) reported 250 COVID-19 new cases across Peel Region. Of those new cases, 120 were in Brampton, 111 in Mississauga and another 13 cases in Caledon and other areas.

Across Ontario, 3,043 new cases were reported on Monday. The province said there are 2,983 people hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 3,861 people in Ontario hospitals with the virus just a week prior.

Some 583 of Monday’s reported patient count were in intensive care.

The province also reported 31 more COVID-19 deaths on Monday, including eight on Saturday.

The Region of Peel hit a milestone last week, fully vaccinating 90 per cent of eligible residents in Mississauga and Brampton aged 12 and older.

The most recent numbers from PPH show 93.4 per cent of Peel residents over 12 years old have had at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 90.3 per cent have received two doses as of Jan. 31.

More than 513,600 Peel residents have received a third dose, and 89.6 per cent of people over 5 years old have received at least one vaccine shot while 83.8 per cent have received two doses.

Ontario restaurants, gyms and theatres welcomed patrons back for the first time in nearly a month on Monday.

Restaurant dining rooms, gyms and cinemas reopened at half capacity after being shuttered on Jan. 5 due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, with larger venues set to reopen with capacity limited to 50 per cent or 500 people — whichever is fewer.

PPH is hosting more “Doses After Dark” COVID-19 vaccination events in Mississauga and Brampton for residents who are unable to book appointments during regular clinic hours:

  • Feb. 5, 1:00 p.m. until midnight at the Save Max Sports Centre in Brampton (1495 Sandalwood Pkwy. E.)
  • Feb. 12, 1:00 p.m. until midnight at the Rockwood Mall Clinic in Mississauga (4141 Dixie Rd. )

These extended clinic hours will offer eligible residents the flexibility to get their booster dose, as well as their first and second doses, PPH says.

Appointments for the Doses After Dark clinics are available through the provincial vaccine booking portal.
