Text scams appear to be on the rise, with some receiving scams that allege to be from major retailer Walmart.

The big box chain is warning residents to be wary of text scams, such as suspicious text messages claiming the receiver has won a free gift card.

Walmart is reminding residents that it doesn’t notify winners of any contest via text message.

“Remember, you can’t win a contest you didn’t enter,” the chain says.

To stay safe against fraud, it’s advised to never provide personal information in response to an unsolicited request — whether it is over the phone or internet — and to not respond to any suspicious looking email, automated calls, or text messages.

More fraud prevention tips are available at Walmart’s website.
