A missing 11-year-old boy has been located safe and sound after taking off on foot along Highway 407 near the boundary of Mississauga and Brampton.

The boy went missing around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 22) when he walked away from a vehicle near Highway 407 and Mississauga Rd.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division said the boy was travelling with care workers when he exited the vehicle. The boy reportedly took off when the driver pulled over to the side of the road.

The OPP searched the area through the night and used both ground and air units to look for the child, who was finally located on Friday afternoon after being missing for nearly a full day.

Schmidt said the boy was found “safe and sound” and has been reunited with family and is with his father. Police thanked members of the public for their assistance locating the child.

“Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. I know we did get many tips that came forward and again, with your support and everyone involved, this case is complete and good news at the end,” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division said in a video statement on Twitter.
