Mirror fire hazard, kids cough syrup and jewelry recalled from stores in Mississauga, Brampton and beyond

Residents in Mississauga and Brampton —particularly parents or caregivers should check their homes for certain brands of cough syrup and jewellry which contain both harmful levels of lead and cadmium, as well as unapproved prescription drugs that pose health risks to young children.

The following items have been recalled:

Robikids and Solmux children’s syrups

Carbocisteine Solmux

Robikids and Solmux— two children’s syrups for thinning mucus have not been authorized safe to use by Health Canada.

The product label states that it contains carbocisteine which is a prescription drug that is not approved in Canada.

However, it is used in other countries to treat conditions associated with too much mucus in the respiratory tract.

Risk: Potentially cause diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, serious allergic reactions that are anaphylactic and skin related have been reported with its use. In severe cases, it can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.

What you should do: Do not use these products and return them to your local pharmacy for proper disposal.

Consult a health care professional if you or your child have used either of these products and have underlying health conditions.

Always buy your prescription drugs only from licensed pharmacies.

It’s important to read product labels to verify that health products have been authorized for sale by Health Canada.

The affected items are from September 15, 2022. The date code can be found on the back of the product packaging.

The recalled jewellery contains cadmium in excess of allowable limits.

Risk:  Exposure can cause health risks to children such as anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.

What you should do: Immediately take the recalled jewellery away from children and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

As of March 24, 2023, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


Sunter Rechargeable LED Vanity Mirror

Sunter Rechargeable LED Vanity Mirror (Front)

The lithium-ion battery supplied with the Sunter Rechargeable LED Vanity Mirror manufactured in March and April of 2022 are the models being recalled.

The affected battery can be identified by the date sticker located on the underside of the base of the mirror and product packaging.

Risk: Potential fire hazard

What you should do: Immediately remove the lithium-ion battery and contact Blackstone International Ltd. for a free replacement battery.

As of March 20, 2023, the company has received 6 reports of battery overheating in Canada. Of those reports, 5 involved property damage. There were no reports of injury.

The affected items are: Hot Focus Petite Boutique Tie-Dye Butterfly, Rainbow and Glow in the Dark children’s jewellery sets. The accessories are contained in a carrying case.

The recalled jewellery contains cadmium in excess of allowable limits.

Risk: Exposure can cause health risks to children such as anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.

What you should do: Consumers should take the recalled jewellery away from children and return it to Winners, HomeSense or Marshalls for a refund.


Kool Charmz Colours Strawberry, Heart & Arrow, and Apple Interchangeable charm

Strawberry

The items affected are: Kool Charmz Colours Strawberry, Heart & Arrow and Apple interchangeable charm. The charms have a silver-coloured metallic clasp with a red strawberry, red heart and purple arrow.

The jewellery contains lead in excess of allowable limits.

According to Children’s Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead.

This can be highly toxic, especially to children and a range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead.

Risk: Exposure can cause health risks to children such as anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.

What you should do: Immediately take the recalled jewellery away from children and discard in regular household waste.

As of March 28, 2023, CTG Brands has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
