Mind Over Metal, a welding trades camp for female high school students in Durham, is coming to Oshawa next Wednesday.

The youth camp promoting welding and the skilled trades to girls in grades 11 and 12 will be at McLaughlin Collegiate from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 31, with instruction from a Red Seal teacher.

The program, designed for girls already enrolled in an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship program, aims to increase the students’ confidence and understanding of welding. Participants will also gain knowledge in identifying tools and materials that could encourage them to pursue a career in the skilled trades.

Other skilled trades in the apprenticeship program include millwright, automotive, electrical and plumbing.

The camp will be hosted by the Durham District School Board and is fully funded by the CWB Welding Foundation, which encourages youth to explore the welding skilled trade through hands-on experiences.
